So… let’s get personal… how did you know when you had found “the one”. Now, now now, I don’t mean your significant other, I mean the carrier that made babywearing “click” for you. Was it a hand-me-down narrow based carrier? A handmade ring sling?  A simple piece of cloth, that got you hooked on wrapping?? We all begin somewhere, where did your journey begin??

Were you lucky enough to fall in love with the first carrier you tried? What did you love about it? Was it the simplicity, the feeling of having baby close or was it having your hands free?

You may have even heard the saying, “finding a carrier is like trying on a pair of jeans, each one fits a little bit differently”, and that is just SO true. While a Tula may fit you like a glove, your bff may find Becos fit HER better. It does not mean that one of you is wrong, or doesn’t know what they are talking about.  We are all different, and it makes sense that not every carrier is going to fit everyone in the same way. The best way to find your perfect carrier is to TRY ALL THE THINGS… seriously! Go to meetups, share your stash with your friends, try different brands, try new products, try old products!!! Don’t be afraid to like something that no one else in your group likes! Your entire group may be made up of soft structured carrier users, where your heart lies in wrapping! Be different! Be brave! Continuously develop your stash! And do not be afraid to come back and try something AGAIN!!

Sometimes you may even find that you will like different carriers for different stages. You may start with buckles, progress to ring slings, move on to wraps, and then go back to buckles again! Wrapping a newborn, for example, is like trying to wrap a bowling ball, you may feel like selling EVERYTHING. Try to resist. Put your favorite wraps to the side, and pick up a WCRS or stretch wrap (borrow one if you have to), and then as your babe grows, uncurls his legs and gets stronger, re-visit them again! Wrapping, ring slinging, or even wearing your newborn in a SSC, is going to change and evolve as your baby grows, as you shrink (or grow), and as they develop. You may go back and forth. You may like everything. Or nothing. Do the words “wrap strike” mean anything to you? Haha! A shorty may not cut it anymore, when it once was the perfect go-to for a guaranteed afternoon nap. Your perfect carrier may ebb and flow as you and your wearee change and grow. Roll with it. It is normal. It is ok.

Like carriers, every babywearer differs, too. While some get caught up in the thrill of the chase, the latest release, the latest HTF pattern, others are more than happy to wear the same carrier for their entire babywearing journey. Stockings, stalkings, IDSO what??? What does babywearing look like to you? ” Lots of you have mentioned that this is your first “blend” (ie, not all cotton) wrap. So let’s geek out (a favorite pastime of this Librarian’s daughter)! Linen is made from fibers from the flax plant, is one of the oldest fibers, and one of the first that people made into string and cloth. In fact, archeologists in Georgia (the Eastern European country, not the state) discovered flax fibers preserved for over 34,000 years; to date, this is the oldest evidence of manmade textiles ever discovered! And those fibers weren’t plain…they have evidence of having been knotted and dyed bright colors like turquoise and pink! We like the way they thought!!!

Linen was a favorite in Egypt for many of the same reasons we baby wearers like it. Linen fabric is durable, lightweight and wicks moisture away from sweaty skin. It is also resistant to insects and microbial growth, and has a smooth, lint-free surface. Egyptians were obsessed with hygiene, so for these qualities, linen was considered pure.

Best of all, linen has a rainbow-y history! Alexander the Great challenged his generals to a competition to see which man could most strikingly dye his linen sailcloth. A few centuries later, it is believed that Cleopatra had a purple linen sail when she came with Mark Antony to Actium and that she sailed with the same purple sail as she fled. Additionally, when Caesar was dictator of Rome in the 1st c. BCE, he ordered linen awnings, dyed blue and spangled with stars, stretched across the whole of the Roman Forum, so that “those engaged in lawsuits might resort there under healthier conditions.”

Finally, linen has some unique characteristics, different than what you may see if you are used to all cotton wraps. Specifically, linen yarn often has “slubs”, or small knots/ thickened areas which occur randomly along its length. In the past, slubs were traditionally considered to be defects, and were associated with low quality linen. That view has changed however, especially due to the extensive use of linen in modern fashion. Nubs/ slubs (and the occasional weaver’s knot) are totally normal and do not compromise the integrity of the fabric. You may see similar properties in hemp blends, as well.
