PAXmommies are no strangers to babywearing that’s for sure.

But what happens when babywearing and pregnancy combine?

With more than one child, babywearing can be an essential part of your every day routine.

Not “wearing” sometimes is just not an option when you have a toddler. (Provided you are in good health.)

As long as you are healthy, and you have made sure to check with your healthcare professional (doctor, midwife, OB, etc.), you are good to go!

**Make sure to reassess as your pregnancy goes on!**

Your older child will love the fact that they get to snuggle mama still, while bonding with their new baby brother or sister.

Pregnant babywearing means that some times you have to be creative; your regular carries just might not be comfortable anymore. This is especially true in the first and third trimester, when you may be competing with morning sickness, a bigger body, and various aches and pains.

Try wearing the buckle of your soft structured carrier low on your hips while your child is in a back carry, or even above your growing bump.

Cannot stand to have anything near your tummy?

Use a ring sling in a hip carry.

Try a Pod, or meh dai.

Perhaps a wrap conversion with no waist.

OR tying Tibetan with a knotless finish.

But if you are pregnant, remember that you can continue babywearing as long as your midwife thinks you can or your body is up for carrying the extra weight! I remember attending a birthday party when I was 7 months pregnant with Baby #5. I was carrying #4 in my Riley Butterfly, ooooh, gorgeous, to keep him out of the older kids’ way. At cake time, I popped him out of the Beco and rolled it up with the stay put strap. A mom that I didn’t know dashed over to me and exclaimed “You were hiding ANOTHER one under there this whole time!?!” I think she was trying to make me feel guilty, but instead I felt proud to be a babywearing pregnant mommy!

To wear your Beco while pregnant, first check with your doctor/ midwife, & then for either back or front carries, the trick is to lower the waistband super low on your hips, putting any of the baby weight onto your hips and thighs instead of your back or belly.

When you aren’t tall enough to see over the railings, why go to the zoo?  Because Mommy will carry you, and you will have a great view!

It’s amazing how many babies and toddlers I saw at the San Diego Zoo last week being pushed in strollers!  Those poor little ones couldn’t see anything interesting!  Only the backs of adults’ knees and maybe a glimpse of pretty foliage as they were wheeled around the park…  My “favorite” was a dad who we happened to pass several times, picking up his son from his stroller, pointing out an animal, and then plunking him back down again in his seat!  Over and over and over! That daddy’s back must have hurt the next day!
