BabyHawk, maker of totally awesome meh dai baby carriers, announced the addition of a new carrier to their line, the BabyHawk Oh Snap!
I was privileged to be able to test an earlier version of the Oh Snap, a prototype from the design process. Let me first say that I love BabyHawks. I’m a meh dai girl, I know them in and out, I know a dozen different ways to tie them. Buckle carriers have a lot of similarities to meh dais, but what most don’t have is flexibility, not just the ability to adjust for different users, but real, true flexibility for different carries, different weight distribution, etc. Until now.
The Oh Snap is a meh dai improved. And not just any meh dai, the cream of the crop BabyHawk. The first thing you might notice about the Oh Snap is that it looks like a BabyHawk. The flip-up headrest is still there, the bold fabric combinations, the comfortably padded straps.
The number one complaint about meh dais is all that tying. With the Oh Snap it’s just buckle and go! No straps dragging, no fiddling with knots. The straps connect at the sides with a buckle, and extra webbing length means that you can easily cross the straps behind you for front wearing, or keep them buckled right in to the same side for backpack style shoulders when baby is on your back.
When you are doing a back carry and have the straps like a backpack, the chest strap (or sternum strap) can be used to keep the straps well-positioned on your shoulders. You will notice that the chest strap on the Oh Snap is unlike any other on the market. It is dual-adjusting, with two connectors on each shoulder strap. This gives a more customized fit. No twisting buckles, no pulling on the straps so they flip and look bunchy. The Oh Snap chest strap will move up and down on the shoulder straps and adjust so that it lays flat against you and does exactly what it should: keep the shoulder straps on your shoulders.
A few notes about the design of the Oh Snap. The size is similar to that of a BabyHawk. Seat darts have been added for a more form-fitting result. The straps will adjust to fit anyone up to a size 22 with no additional pieces necessary. And yes, they will adjust down to fit even a size zero. There’s nothing more annoying than doing a back carry and not being able to tighten in a carrier enough to hold your baby close, and the Oh Snap has taken that into account, making it ideal for small moms who may not have had success with other structured carriers. The Oh Snap is recommended for children 6 months and up. There is no infant insert currently available (although there is one in the works!), but until then, make sure your baby is able to sit on their own and can straddle the seat of the Oh Snap before you use it. Maximum weight is 45 pounds. That’s a lot, folks!
And now I would like to share my favorite part of the Oh Snap. I need to share a little bit of personal information in order to do this. I’m a small mama. Not tiny, tiny, but small. Being small, I’m lacking in one major area, my derriere. I don’t have much of one. Not much hips, either. This makes wearing carriers with waist support belts a little difficult. Most people will wear padded waist straps down around their hips, effectively transferring much their baby’s weight off their back and to their hips. This is a lot more comfortable when baby reaches 25 plus pounds.
Not everyone has the same shape around the hips, though. And those like me, who don’t have much of anything back there to hold a waist belt in place might find that the waist belt doesn’t stay in place, instead it slips down. Others might find that it creates pressure on the sides or becomes problematic with certain clothing. Well the Oh Snap takes this into account! Instead of just having a plain waist belt, or trying to decide between curved or straight, the Oh Snap is the first ever structured carrier with a customizable waist belt!
With two adjustments on each side of the waist belt, the Oh Snap can be adjusted to perfectly fit hips in all shapes and sizes. The adjustments allow the top of the waist strap to be adjusted separately from the bottom of the waist belt, so you can truly get the belt to sit on your hips, therefore your baby’s weight will be on your hips. Instant comfort!

The ObiMama herself has been so kind as to send PAXbaby a Traveling meh dai to traipse across the USA bringing joy to each family she visits. The PAXbaby ObiMama Traveler started here in Southern California and almost didn’t make it out on any trip because I love it so much! My only consolation is to know how it is blessing the families it will visit, but OH, I had the hardest time packing it up to go! As a mom of 4, I never ever imagined I would ever be thrown into any unknown parenting world. After 4 kids, I was pretty sure I had seen or done it all. When pregnant with my 5th, my normal was forever changed by the birth of my first preemie at 34 weeks due to HELLP. All my “attachment parenting” styles were thrown out the window at delivery. No skin to skin contact after birth, no breastfeeding, no holding, not even touching my brand new baby. The once crowded delivery room was immediately empty and I was left alone, feeling helpless. All I could think about was the crucial bonding we were missing. How he needed me. How he must feel so alone without his mother. Once I was transferred to my room I was handed a NICU kit. In the bag I found all the stuff you would expect as a NICU mom. Some pamphlets on preemies, supplies for the breast pump and something called a snoedel. I set those aside and started up my demands for my 1stNICU visit to see my son for the very first time. As they wheeled me in, I wasn’t sure what to expect. 34 weekers are late preemies, from what I read, he would be perfectly fine, probably in an open crib asleep waiting to be transferred back to my room.. Boy was I wrong. No one had explained anything to me. I was wheeled up to an incubator, where my precious baby was laying in just a diaper with tubes and wires and a breathing mask. I was devastated. I wanted to hold him, love him, tell him mommy was there and everything would be ok. Only I wasn’t allowed to touch him, wasn’t allowed to hold him. Again I felt as helpless as I did after delivery.

They wheeled me back to my room. After a good cry, I grabbed the NICU bag they had previously given to me. I pulled out the snoedel and read the instructions. This doll would give him what I couldn’t while he was trapped in that incubator. He would be able to smell me, know that I’m there and that I love him. So I put the snoedel in my shirt and went to sleep. I was desperate to do something for him, anything and putting this doll in my shirt to fill it with my smell felt like something at least.

The next morning I ran straight to the NICU. Again I was told I couldn’t hold or touch my baby. Regulating his breathing was more important than bonding. I handed the nurse my snoedel and she immediately opened his incubator and draped it over his little body. It actually covered him from his toes to his neck. Looking in his incubator and seeing this doll that I knew was covered in my scent brought me such peace. To know every breath he took, had mommy smell. The nurses even referred to it as his mommy doll.

As the days passed and as I was able to finally hold, bond and feed my little guy, I also had to continue to leave him there. The peace and comfort of leaving him draped in the snoedel, knowing that he felt me even when I wasn’t there, really helped ease the pain of leaving him. That doll stayed on or beside him his entire NICU stay. Even under the bili lights for jaundice, the nurses made sure that doll was under his little body at least.After we came home, the snoedel stayed in his crib with him. The same way the nurses draped it over him, I draped it over him while he slept.

My son is now 17 months old. You would never know he was a preemie by looking at him. You would also never know that we didn’t have the immediate bonding that I felt so robbed of at his birth. He adores me and is very “attached”. More attached then my other kids who never left my side, who had immediate skin to skin contact, who immediately breastfed. All the things he missed out on. That snoedel is now tucked away safely in his baby box and has very special sentimental value I could never explain. I am so thankful my NICU provided this and was very sad to find out that most NICU’s don’t. This would be a perfect gift for a new NICU mom. Actually perfect for any mom that needs a moment away and wants her baby to stay comforted by her scent.

Hard core babywearing moms will say that front facing out carries are dangerous, overstimulating, or uncomfortable, but as experience has shown me, a small amount of forward facing can be perfect! When I needed to postpone Baby #5’s afternoon nap, I would turn him around to face the world, learn a bit about his surroundings, and be entertained by his siblings. After about 15 minutes, I would notice the classic symptoms of overstimulation – neck turning, hands coming up to his face, fussing – and I would turn him around to nestle into his favorite spot and get his nap underway! If baby wants to have some time facing out, the base can be snapped smaller to accommodate the narrow crotch of a smaller baby. If the base is not snapped to the smaller position, the base of the Gemini is as wide as the Beco Butterfly.

And Michelle had the right answer, “Yup, Manduca Sky Line Plum! Pretty!!”
This gorgeous SSC was my little present to remember Australia by… Glad to have you, Manduca, but so sad not be in Australia right now, sob! Interestingly, due to Ergo’s wanna-be monopoly of the Soft Structured Carrier market, the Manduca baby carrier company may not sell these cuties in the USA, so all you American moms can sigh, cry, rant, or rave at Ergo and their finky business practices right now. However, all you Canadian moms, this SSC is right up there on my list of favorites so you may want to slip a hint to your hubbies for your next birthdays!!!
There are a lot of sweet details and “interesting” parts of the Manduca that grow with baby from newborn through toddlerhood! It is of German heritage, but the regular line of carriers is manufactured in China while Special Edition collection is made in the Czech Republic, but all Manducas are an organic cotton/hemp blend with the generously cut waistband and the elastic bands to rein in the dangling straps. The infant insert is similar to the Beco Butterfly’s insert, but the tabs of the insert curl around the outside of the carrier in a most alluring and European way! This infant seat has a narrower crotch so that the baby is seated in the infant insert, with legs out, but still within the confines of the carrier. Once baby is ready to sit frog-legged inside the carrier or have 1 or both legs come out, the infant insert can be rolled up and secured within the base of the carrier.
Remember, a narrow crotch carrier (aka crotch dangler) offers no support for baby’s legs, knees, feet… All of baby’s weight is pointed towards that 1 spot, the base of the spine where the carrier is holding them. The Manduca, and all the other wonderful baby carriers that we love & adore here at PAXbaby, support baby’s entire bottom, and with young babies, down to their knees! This seated position is extremely important to keep baby ergonomically comfortable and to distribute baby’s weight across his whole body instead of that 1 spot. The strap padding that continued alllll the way down the shoulder straps is a nice added touch, and also the extra buckles on the shoulders that ensure a truly customizable, snug fit for baby. Being able to cross the shoulder straps is always a nice bonus too!
The Manduca shines as a front and back carrier! The hip position is just ok, but I feel that all of my favorite SSCs are capable of hip carrying, but why would I want to, I have a Scootababy, hahaa! The hood is removable and clips onto the shoulder straps with a satisfying *clip* ! To get baby on your back, you will need to hone your skills at either the Superman Toss, or the Hip Scoot, but either way, the back carry was easy peasy to adjust! The buckles are all very smooth and easy to tighten and let back out for another babywearer to use. The racing stripes on this Plum Skyline really amused me too, and I appreciated the fine details like the matching fabric being used on the infant insert & hood also!
When I said that the Manduca grows with your baby, I meant that literally!!!! The body of the Manduca appears to
be petite, measuring in at 33 centimeters, while comparing it to a favorite, the Beco is almost 41 cm tall! As another comparison, the Ergo is 35 cm. Why is the Manduca so short, you may be asking yourself! How can the Manduca possibly carry toddlers up to 45 pounds easily? Because with a simple wave of your magic wand, ABRACADABRA, the front panel unzips and becomes 8 cm taller!!!! Magically, your Manduca becomes a toddler carrier, and a very good one at that!
I love it, can’t wait to wear it again, and wouldn’t mind letting you “borrow” it if you wanted to give it a whirl with your own baby! Thanks, Manduca, for a great SSC!

At first glance I knew I would like this Soft Structured Carrier with its peaceful color scheme and its straight forward design. Once I got to know Boba a little bit better, I liked it even more!!! As an eco conscious family always striving to be greener, both my husband and I loved the idea of an organic baby carrier made in the USA., but Nap Inc took the Boba baby carrier beyond our thoughts and provided us with the Boba 2G, the second generation of their backpack/ frontpack that caters to older, taller babies. Manufactured in Boulder, Colorado (get it? Bo-ba? Boulder Baby! Cute, huh!?!) I feel great about wearing a carrier that is providing jobs for local workers, keeping the economy stateside, and is just so comfortable! Now, onto the details! The optional sunshade can also be used a napping hood or windbreaker, and folds up neatly into the front panel with the help of 2 neat elastic little bands. To connect it to the shoulder straps, reach it up and snap the hood at the desired length on each side. The sleeping head also makes for the perfect discrete nursing cover! No one will even know what you 2 are up to under there! When in use, make sure there is some slack in the hood so that your child’s face isn’t pressed too snugly against your body. You always want baby’s nose & mouth clear to ensure that they can breathe. If you and baby decide unanimously that the hood is simply not for you, removal of the fabric sunshade is made easy with 3 little snaps, and you can stash the hood away in your closet for your *next baby,* wink wink!
For front carries, buckling the chest strap can be a test of dexterity, but keep in mind that the lower on your back you make get that strap, the better you will be distributing your baby’s weight across your whole body, not just your upper back and shoulders. The double shoulder straps adjust easily by pulling away from your body or through the buckles on the carrier as well for that extra support you may need hiking or for longer front carries.
For back carries, the chest strap keeps the shoulder straps snug and comfortable. The waistband is nicely contoured with just the amount of padding to hold my baby’s weight without making me feel like a football player! Some baby carriers also have the tendency to make a lot of cleavage where you don’t usually have much, but the shape of the Boba shoulder straps avoid that! This video shows a back carry in action, but don’t get the mother’s own belt confused with the Boba waistband!
My son’s favorite part of his Boba? The foot straps aka Boba’s ingenious & now removable foot stirrups! Boba has made a study of toddler babywearing and come to the conclusion that to be truly ergonomic for baby also, your baby carrier should support your child’s feet while being worn. I was neither here nor there about the foot straps until my 18 month old was absolutely thrilled to be given a place to rest his feet! I realized that during the hours that I am wearing my little boy, unless I am holding his feet up, his poor little legs are just dangling. What a relief to have somewhere to rest his sweet legs and to help keep his body in a healthy sitting position! To quote Boba, the “perks of leg support:
- provide proper leg support in the flexed abducted position
- naturally tilt the pelvis, fills out hip sockets, aligns spine
- the more leg support the less pressure absorbed by the spine
- takes the pressure off of the hamstrings
- reduces the leg dangle
- gives feet a place to rest
- ensures complete blood flow throughout legs
- no pinching of the major nerve behind the thigh”
After that list, how can you NOT want to try the Boba! Plus, you’ve probably already heard but each carrier is made from totally organic materials! The Boba is 100% GOTS and OE100 certified organic cotton and filled with 100% organic Texas cotton lining, and as soft as can be!!! Thanks to the toddler sized front panel, the Boba can support kids from ages 6-9-12 months (depending on height, of course!) to around 4 years. The height restrictions are listed as 15-45 pounds, and just in case you were wondering, the Boba’s measurements are:
- body 15 inches wide and 16 inches tall
- 19 inch shoulder straps that extend an additional 19 inches
- 28 inch waist belt that extends to 50 inches
- 5 inch waist belt
- total weight of the carrier: 1.8 pounds
Also as useful information to know when recommending carriers to friends, the old Boba was lower priced, but also had fewer bells & whistles… The foot straps were NOT removable, and there was not a hood of any kind. The waist buckles were those “impossible to work with 1 hand” safety buckles, and the waistband was not as comfortable as today’s fabulous 2G! Now, enough reading, get planning! You can buy a Boba, rent a Boba, or pre-order a Boba! What is a babywearing mama to do!?!

I am not trying to dwell, babywearers, but I’d like to explain again why the Bjorn and similar carriers are just NOT the best choice! I know that the Bjorn is America’s most popular baby carrier, but that is truly thanks to the company’s massive advertising budget! The fact that practically every baby registry in every big box store (aka Target, Babies R Us, etc…) includes a Bjorn, Infantino, or Jeep baby carrier is a step in the right babywearing direction! But it is also negative progress since most Bjorn-wearing parents will give up babywearing after their baby hits double digits in weight. And why is that, friends? Because the “crotch dangling” baby carriers like the Snugli and the Infantino hold baby in a terribly awkward and uncomfortable position. The baby’s weight puts pressure directly onto a pivotal part of the body – the crotch! And whether a baby girl or a baby boy is being worn, this cannot be comfortable or ergonomic! Not only that, but I am convinced that the manufacturers of these crotch dangling baby carriers have actually never worn one of their own baby carriers! If the manufacturers behind the Bjorn had ever tried actually used their own Bjorn, I think that we would see a huge re-design in their line of carriers! The brains behind Baby Bjorn , Jeep, & Chicco would then experience for themselves the ill-fitting shoulder straps and the lack of back & shoulder support needed in a truly GREAT baby carrier!
My guess is that someone has pointed out to these business owners the ergonomic value of baby carriers like the BabyHawk or the Beco leading to the release of the Infantino’s own Mai Tei product, the Wrap ‘n Tie, and Bjorn’s “invention” of a Beco Gemini – esque carrier complete with a waistband, padded straps, & the quintessential Baby Bjorn front facing out capability. Here is what Bjorn has to say about their new Comfort Carrier:

Now, as a mom well versed in babywearing and the lingo of the babywearing world, I can see several key words that Bjorn is using to reel in babywearers previously critical of any carrier with the Bjorn label on it! ERGONOMIC, PADDED SHOULDER STRAPS, DISTRIBUTE BABY’S WEIGHT, HANDS-FREE. Baby Bjorn has obviously been doing their babywearing homework, and they have discovered what features are most important to us. However, this large manufacturer has made 1 very large error! They have priced this new ergonomic Bjorn at around $200 retail, and that is a BIG mistake! $200 could be spent on a gorgeous wrap conversion, a custom Mai Tei, or a legacy half buckle SSC that will go down in babywearing history! But $200 spent on a China-made, Beco/ Ergo wanna-be with a Baby Bjorn label and a BRUS store receipt? I don’t think so, Baby Bjorn!
How can you fight back?
By promoting baby carriers that we know, trust, and deserve to carry your baby!
Wear your WAHM made baby carrier with pride!
Pass out business cards to your favorite mom-owned baby carrier shop!
Urge your mommy friends to register for a GREAT baby carrier instead of a mediocre one!
Let a new parent borrow your own baby carrier and give a quick tutorial so that they can have a GREAT experience with it!
Smile at Baby Bjorn wearing parents, and slyly say “Did you know there is a carrier even MORE comfortable than that one!?!”
And most importantly wear your baby with confidence: let the whole world know that you are a BABYWEARER!
