Milk sharing aka wet nursing or cross-nursing is really common among my group of friends! Many of us have nursed each other’s babies, toddlers, and kids out of necessity or even just to boost our little ones’ immune strength! It’s a truly wonderful way to bond with your most cherished friends; my kids now have milk siblings. Their milk mamas have shared the bond of physical closeness as well as the antibodies that comes from one’s own milk. I can’t think of a more perfect way to show love as a mommy friend!

It’s sad but true that for many years, I felt tethered to my babies who were each exclusively breastfeed for almost 12 months. Until I found my community here in Southern California, I couldn’t physically leave my children without a back up feeding source but once I found my village, I allowed myself to leave my young baby in the care of dear friends who would breastfeed her as needed. My plight of not bottle training and yet desperately needing to go on a date with my husband was solved with one simple statement. “Please feed her when she seems hungry!” Suddenly, our options widened, and PAXdaddy and I have enjoyed quite a few dates since the birth of our daughter in 2013 by leaving she and our 6 older children with friends as well as having provided childcare for other friends wanting to escape the clutches of their little milk monster for a few hours!

I myself have been able to feed many of my friends’ babies for a plethora of reasons! I was very proud to put my lactating breasts to work one night when I was a doula at a friend’s birth. She had a trauma shortly after delivering her baby so I nursed her newborn through the night while also taking care of my own sweet 5 month old baby. The next morning I put out a call for help, and an army of mutual friends arrived to help with the new baby and also to keep baby’s tummy full of 100% breastmilk! I still marvel at that amazing week and how a group of women could come together to keep one little baby well nourished, clean, comforted while her mommy was under the weather.

At 32 months old, my daughter, Cate, was still breastfeeding and enjoying the mommy cuddles that it’s hard to find in a large busy family! When our 8th baby, Blaise, was born at just 15 weeks, my milk dried up leaving Cate high and dry. Luckily for her, an entire herd of lactating friends came during the month of May to care for me, my husband, and my children as I recovered from the loss of our beloved baby. She nursed from several mothers over the course of the month and now refers to one of our closest friends as “Mama Milk.” I am so grateful to each and every friend who offered to breastfeed my sweet girl. It means so much to me and made the transition to being a non-lactating mother much easier and less emotional.

At PAXretreat last week, PAXfriend Evonne had a little snuggle time with #toddlerCate. My lovie was over the moon with the fresh milk, and Evonne was happy to fill her little tummy with liquid gold. I cannot wait to have another baby, have my milk come in, and be able to feed someone else’s baby straight from the tap!

We still have a few of these AMAZING half wrap conversion Vice Versa Emeibabys left :http://shop.paxbaby.com/emeibaby-half-girasol-vice-versa-cuervo-twill-baby-size/

The Emeibaby buckles on like a soft-structured carrier, but the unique wrap panel adjusts to ensure excellent knee-to-knee support at every stage as your baby grows!

It’s important to note the difference between a full wrap conversion and a half wrap conversion; a full doesn’t use any canvas fabric while the half ONLY has wrap on the front panel with a lining, shoulder straps, waistband and hood of black canvas!

Special features of the Emeibaby include :

A padded & highly-adjustable waistbelt and shoulder straps.

An attached sleep hood

European manufacturing and design

Baby-size is recommended from newborns (6.6 lbs) to toddlers (up to 33 lbs). No infant insert needed!!

Toddler-plus is recommended for ages 1-3+ (up to 39.6 lbs). The back panel is 2.8″ longer and 1.2″ wider than the baby-size carrier.

The Emeibaby can be used for front or back carries, and includes chest clip

PAXbaby recommends hand-washing with mild detergent (no fabric softener, please!) and air drying to protect the soft fabric.

“Sailor Avonlea was born via emergency c-section on June 13th in Las Vegas, addicted to and withdrawing from the effects of a pregnancy filled with heavy methenphetamine use, homelessness, and mental illness. After a 13 day long fight between the hospital at which she was delivered, Child Protective Services, and a large team of adoption professionals and lawyers, we were finally granted the right to adopt her and bring her home to California! We are the adoptive parents of her 18 month old full biological sibling, Lachlan, who was also born addicted to and withdrawing from meth, and while we were not anticipating adoption again so soon, when the opportunity was placed in our laps, we could not say no to another little love who would otherwise be lost to the foster system.

We have two older biological daughters whom I breastfed well into their first year; I was actually such an overproducer that I ended up donating several thousand ounces of breastmilk to a local milk bank over a period of several years. When we decided to adopt initially, I knew immediately that I wanted to feed our new baby with donor milk, as I fully believe in its amazing powers to heal the damage inflicted on a newborns tiny body and brain. When I initially approached the milk bank that I had so lovingly handed thousands of ounces of breastmilk to years prior, I found out quickly that I’d have to be made of money in order to afford their “non profit” price of $3 an ounce for breastmilk! Not satisfied with this answer, I turned to the internet, and quickly found “Human Milk 4 Human Babies” as well as “Eats and Feets.” Through both of these peer to peer sharing forums, we were able to provide breastmilk to our son for 13 months! Despite being born a drug addicted baby, he is now 100% free of health issues and is developmentally completely typical, things that I believe the power of breastmilk has made possible.

We hope to provide these benefits for our Sailor as well, especially given the abuse she suffered at the hands of so called medical professionals; for the first fourteen days of her life, she was fed formula, left in a plastic bassinet, and only held every 3 hours to be fed and changed. If she cried for milk before those 3 hours were up, she was left to cry, alone and hungry until her scheduled feeding time came along. No one was allowed to see her or even touch her for 14 days,  and when she finally was allowed to leave the hospital, she weighed a full pound less than when she was born. Our sweet girl has had a very hard time transitioning due to her drug dependency, but she IS gaining weight quickly and eating like a champ on all the milk donated by friends. Our freezer supply is quickly diminishing however, and we are feeling desperate to provide her with the nourishment she needs to heal and grow. We have witnessed firsthand the power of breastmilk to heal the damage that drug addiction, lack of prenatal care, and dangerous maternal behavior can have on a baby, and we desperately want our daughter to be the recipient of as much of this liquid life that she can.”

– Robert and Kirstin

Please consider milk sharing with Sailor in any way possible! Her family lives in the Bay area but has set up milk drop off points in Southern California as well! Email Kirstin to set up a donation at milkforsailor@icloud.com, and thank you for keeping this amazing family in your prayers! Much love from the PAXmommies <3

FINALLY! The Girasol MySol has arrived at PAXbaby!
paxbaby
http://shop.paxbaby.com/girasol-mysol/
paxbaby
The MySol is a wrap conversion meh dai with a fabulous fit for most babywearers! Carry your baby safely, comfortably and ergonomically from birth to toddler in front or on your back. The carrier design is based on traditional Asian baby carriers but has been adapted to modern needs with its adjustable front panel and extra carrying bags.

The MySol is made from two layers of Girasol wrap fabric that nestles like a second skin around the baby being carried! Worn with either side facing out, the MySol is essentially reversible lengthening its life span and doubling its usability!

The MySol has been designed to grow with the child in order to ensure that babywearers get the most for their money and can use it for as long as possible: the width of the material between the legs may be easily adjusted – ideal for baby’s ergonomic M position with knees higher than bum!  The back of the MySol may be extended so that the carrier will still safely and comfortably fit even after your baby has grown into a toddler! The integrated hood supports your sleeping baby’s head and protects it against the sun; the hood’s width is also adjustable.

Lightly padded shoulder straps and a padded waistband also make the MySol so comfy. Your carrier will include a chest belt as well as a practical hip bag, and a storage bag!!!  Girasol’s My Sol have been lovingly woven and sewn in small workshops in Guatemala, and finished entirely from hand loomed woven wrap fabric!!!

Wear the MySol with love!

Have you written out birth stories for each of your children?
How soon after their birth did you write it up?

Did you find that you forgot the little details, or was it still etched upon your mind?
It is crazy how you spend 9 (ish) months (give or take), dreaming of your sweet baby – what he or she will look like, what they will sound like, how big they will be, whose eyes will they have?? What will their first carrier be?? And then… how will the birth be? Will it go “as planned”? Will there be any surprises?? Will they be early? Late? Just on time??

And then…

That moment.

When you hold your baby for the first time, breath in his sweet scent… and all the questions fade… it is like you knew them all along.

Happy Tuesday!! PAXmommy Mel’s new baby Luc is already FOUR weeks old TODAY!
Do any of our PAXfriends have brand new little squishies right now, as well???

Luc is Baby #4 for PAXmommy Mel, and makes for three, 3 and under in their family. To say that their home is loud and crazy is an understatement! Haha! With more than one child sometimes it can be so hard to actually sit back and relish in all the newness a squish brings. Thank goodness for the age of camera phones to record all of those firsts!

How do you make special time for each child in your family??

I’ve been lucky enough to speak with many babywearers in person about the physiologic newborn position, and how to avoid putting a newborn baby into a spread squat, by keeping their knees, hips, and feet all in a near straight parallel vertical lines, with knees above bum.

Je Porte Mon Bebe has provided us with this fantastic illustration of how the physiologic newborn position looks with baby inside a wrap.

physiologic newborn position

With a baby under around 3-4 months, the position in the photo above is what you want to see in any type of carrier. It is possible to achieve this body posture in a ring sling, wrap, or meh dai, but much more difficult in a buckle carrier, which is just one of the reasons why I generally suggest that buckle carriers are best saved for after baby has more torso control and naturally assumes a squat position on his own, when picked up. This developmental milestone typically occurs around 4 months old.

Some time around 4 months, when you lift him to your body in-arms, baby will span your body, and grab onto your torso with his legs spread. This is a good indication that your baby’s pelvis and spine are developmentally ready to be worn in a spread squat position. The position of your baby in a carrier should always mirror a developmentally appropriate position in which you would carry your baby in-arms.

Je Porte Mon Bebe spread squatThe photo above is a perfect example of the spread squat position with a baby who is developmentally ready. Baby has strong neck and torso control, sits much more upright in the wrap, with less of a curve in the spine, and the pelvis is naturally more open, with the legs easily spanning the mother’s torso. Many babies will gradually shift toward this position as they approach 4 months, and most by 5 months. This baby is likely beginning to push up on hands and knees, and may be doing some “tripod” sitting.

Physical developmental milestones can always help guide us toward the appropriate carriers and positions for a baby. Wearing a carrier which is comfortable for both you and your baby will mean more babywearing, which in turn fosters a more secure bond. That relationship is carried down the road and will benefit you both for years to come, even when your baby is too big for you to lift.

PAXmommy Mel is a week away from her “due date” with Baby #4, and has been receiving daily babywatch texts for the last two weeks already.

How do you deal with the constant questioning???

Do you deactivate from Facebook until baby arrives?
Or do you update everyone daily on every little detail?

The last few weeks of pregnancy are always the craziest.

Will TODAY be THE day?  Or will it be TWO or THREE weeks from now?

There are only so many times a woman can fold and re-fold all those tiny diapers and onesies.

SO far, here are the stats:

Baby #1 – Born right on EDD – boy 7lbs 13oz, 21.5″

Baby #2 – Born right on EDD – girl 8lbs 10z, 20″

Baby #3 – Born 3 days “early” – girl 8lbs 4oz, 20.5″

Baby #4 – EDD: September 18th – boy ?????

SOOO… it is only a matter of time!!!

AND… most importantly… WHAT will be his first ride!??!
