Babywearing mamas, let’s talk about something serious…. our baby carriers are under attack from CPSC and we need to make sure that we are doing something about it!!!! The BCIA is the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance which was formed to “advance the well-being, growth, and interests of baby carrier manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, and educators.” Anyone who wears a baby carrier, makes a carrier, or promotes babywearing needs to be involved because in this case, numbers matter! The more force we have behind the BCIA the more productive we can be and the less the CPSC will want to mess with us! The BCIA has over 500 members now, and that’s just in 3 months!

At the first annual meeting last night, Vesta – formerly of Ellaroo – challenged us each to invite, well actually recruit, 5 friends to join the BCIA! If each of them then tells 5 friends and so on, think how quickly we can grow!!! The main focus of BCIA right now is the “work with the ASTM to establish a voluntary standard for sling-style carriers. Without quality standards that are written in a way to be achievable to small home businesses, our industry stands in grave regulatory danger.”

The dinner last night was so much fun, although the PAXbaby mama had to bow out early due to PAXBaby #6 deciding to not like Mexican food… It was fabulous to see so many babywearing leaders all in 1 room! Vesta, Kristi Hayes, the Gypsymama, the BabyHawk mamas, the Sakura Bloom family, Rochelle Price and her cute men from Sling Rings, the Beco Baby Carrier crew, and many more!!!

If you love babywearing, and you don’t want our way of life to change or become “outlawed” please join the BCIA and help make a difference for our babies and future babies!
